Ruckus SmartZone controllers deliver enterprise-grade WiFi management for high-density environments like hotels, stadiums, and universities. By integrating Spotipo's captive portal with your SmartZone hotspot, you can add email capture, social login, paid WiFi access, and marketing automation while maintaining the performance and reliability Ruckus is known for.
This guide walks you through configuring Ruckus SmartZone's Hotspot (WISPr) authentication to work with Spotipo's cloud platform. The setup involves RADIUS server configuration, hotspot portal creation, and walled garden settings for seamless guest authentication.
What you'll accomplish:
Create a Ruckus SmartZone site in Spotipo with RADIUS credentials
Configure WISPr hotspot authentication on your SmartZone WLAN
Set up authentication and accounting servers for guest access control
Configure walled garden domains for portal functionality
What you'll need:
Ruckus SmartZone controller with admin access
CLI access to disable MAC/IP encryption
Active Spotipo account (start free trial)
Important: You must disable MAC/IP encryption via CLI for proper RADIUS communication between SmartZone and Spotipo.
Add a Site
Each location is represented by a Site. A site can have multiple routers (of the same type)
A new site can be created either while creating a new login or by clicking on the switch sites button and adding a new location.
Select Ruckus Smartzone under WiFi hardware, provide a name for the location and click on Save.
Add Smart Zone Entry to Spotipo
Go to Settings->Smartzone Config and note down the details provided.
Disable MAC/IP encryption
Please login to controller CLI and execute below command
no encrypt-mac-ip
Add a new WLAN.
Log into the SmartZone controller and go to the WLAN tab. Use the Create button.
In the WLAN configuration, provide the required SSID and Select Hotspot(WISPr) as the authentication method.
Add Hotspot Portal
Under the Hotspot Portal tab, use the Create Button to add a new Hotspot Portal.

* And use https://app.spotipo.com/smartzone/postauth/ as the URL_( replace app.spotipo.com with your server FQDN if you are using a Whitelabel domain)_
* Add the below domains to the walled garden
*
app.spotipo.com
Create Authentication and Accounting Servers
Check the user controller as proxy option and add below authentication server and accounting server IP addresses and generated secret:
* 35.205.248.64
* 34.77.150.10
Configure Radius Options
Now go to Radius options tab.
* Select the NAS ID as user-defined.
* Provide the value generated in Spotipo.
* Configure Called STA ID to AP MAC.
Save And Test
Now, you can save and test the configuration by connecting a device to the Guest WiFI network created.
Your Ruckus SmartZone Hotspot Is Now Active
Once your configuration is complete and the portal appears when connecting to your guest WiFi network, you can start capturing guest data, running marketing campaigns, or offering paid WiFi access through your Ruckus SmartZone infrastructure.
What to do next:
Customize your splash page design in Spotipo dashboard to match your branding
Set up email marketing integrations to automatically sync guest contacts
Configure bandwidth packages to offer tiered WiFi access
Common Ruckus SmartZone hotspot issues:
Portal not loading: Verify app.spotipo.com is added to walled garden domains
Authentication failures: Ensure RADIUS secret matches exactly (case-sensitive)
MAC format errors: Confirm "Redirected Mac format" is set to aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff
RADIUS communication errors: Check that MAC/IP encryption is disabled via CLI
