Ruckus Zone Director provides centralized management for Ruckus wireless networks, and integrating Spotipo's captive portal adds powerful guest WiFi capabilities including email capture, social login, and paid access options. This integration uses Ruckus's WISPr hotspot service with RADIUS authentication to manage guest access across all your Ruckus access points.
This guide walks you through configuring Ruckus Zone Director to work with Spotipo's cloud authentication system. The setup involves creating AAA servers, configuring hotspot services, and making CLI adjustments for proper authentication. Note that some configuration steps require SSH access to your Zone Director.
What you'll accomplish:
Create a Ruckus Zone Director site in Spotipo and generate RADIUS credentials
Configure RADIUS authentication and accounting servers
Set up WISPr hotspot service with walled garden access
Enable hotspot on your guest WLAN with CLI configuration
What you'll need:
Ruckus Zone Director with admin access
SSH access to Zone Director CLI for final configuration steps
External/public IP address for your Zone Director
Active Spotipo account
Important: Ruckus Zone Director's web GUI doesn't allow all necessary settings. You'll need SSH access to complete the NAS ID and Called Station ID configuration via CLI.
Create a Ruckus Zone Director(ZD) Site
Add a Ruckus ZD site from the top right of the dashboard. Switch Site -> Create New location -> Ruckus ZD.
Find Ruckus ZD configuration page
On your spotipo portal page, find Ruckus ZD configuration details under Settings->Ruckus ZD Config
You will need to use this data in your Ruckus ZD configuration
Configure AAA servers
Login to your Zone director web GUI and go to AAA servers under Configure.
Press the Add New button, and enter below details to create a Radius server.
Use 34.77.150.10 as radius server address
Press the Add New again, and create a radius accounting server.
Add Hotspot Service
Go to Configure -> Hotspot Services and use the Create New button to add a hotspot service.
Select WISPr Smart Client Support as None
Enter Login page as https://app.spotipo.com/ruckus/guest/
Enter Start page as https://app.spotipo.com/ruckus/postauth/ and enable redirect to the following URL
Select authentication and accounting servers to the ones you created
In the Location Information section, add location id generated by Spotipo
In walled garden, add 107.178.247.148 into the list.
If you want to configure Facebook/social logins do add the IPs corresponding to those as well
Enable WLAN with hotspot service
Go to Configure->WLAN from the list of WLANs, edit the one you wish to enable Hotspot on.
Keep type as Hotspot Service and Select the Hotspot Service you have created.
Change CLI settings
Unfortunately ZD GUI doesn’t allow to change all settings, you will need to SSH in to the Ruckus ZoneDirector. In the SSH console, enter the following.
Remember to replace YOURWLANESSID with ESSID of your guest WLAN
enable config wlan "YOURWLANESSID" called-station-id-type ap-mac nasid-type mac-addr end
Your Ruckus Zone Director Guest WiFi Is Now Active
Once you've completed both the web GUI configuration and CLI settings, your Ruckus Zone Director hotspot service is ready. Guests connecting to your WLAN will be redirected to Spotipo's captive portal for authentication—and you can start capturing guest data, running marketing campaigns, or offering paid WiFi access.
What to do next:
Test the captive portal by connecting a device to your guest WLAN
Customize your splash page design in Spotipo dashboard to match your branding
Set up email marketing integrations to automatically sync guest contacts
Configure paid WiFi packages to generate revenue from premium access
Common Ruckus Zone Director setup issues:
Portal not appearing: Verify 107.178.247.148 is added to the walled garden and all required domains for social login
Authentication failures: Ensure RADIUS secret matches exactly between Spotipo and Zone Director (case-sensitive)
NAS ID errors: Confirm you've run the CLI commands to set nasid-type to mac-addr
Accounting not working: Check that the accounting server is configured with the correct IP and secret
CLI configuration reminder: The CLI commands are essential for proper operation. Without setting called-station-id-type to ap-mac and nasid-type to mac-addr, authentication will fail. Make sure to replace YOURWLANESSID with your actual WLAN name when running the commands.
Walled garden for social login: If enabling Facebook or other social logins, remember to add the corresponding IP ranges to your walled garden list. Without these, social authentication buttons won't load properly.
