One Time Password (OTP) authentication adds an extra layer of security to your guest WiFi while ensuring only valid phone numbers access your network. By requiring SMS verification, you prevent fake signups, collect verified contact information, and enable SMS marketing campaigns to re-engage customers.

This guide walks you through enabling OTP login on your Spotipo guest WiFi. The setup requires an SMS gateway integration and takes approximately 10 minutes to configure. Once enabled, guests must verify their phone number with a text message code before accessing your WiFi.

What you'll accomplish:

  • Configure an SMS gateway for OTP delivery (Twilio, Messagebird, or other supported gateways)

  • Enable phone number collection on your splash page

  • Activate OTP verification for guest authentication

  • Test the OTP flow to ensure proper functionality

What you'll need:

  • Active Spotipo account with a configured site

  • SMS gateway account (Twilio, Messagebird, Firetext, or ECall)

  • SMS credits or subscription for sending verification codes

Business benefits: OTP authentication reduces spam signups by 90%+, ensures marketing compliance with verified contacts, and provides a friction-balanced login method, secure enough to prevent abuse, but fast enough not to frustrate legitimate guests.

Configure an SMS Gateway

Start by configuring an SMS gateway (choose the preferred gateway).

Enable Phone Login

Navigate to the Splash Page->Settings icon and select Phone number Collection.

Navigate to settings -> Phone Login to change the settings.

Enable One-Time Password ( OTP)

In settings, under the Verification tab, turn on the Enable validation option.

Testing it out

Save the configuration, and use the DEMO button to see the feature in action.

Your One-Time Password Guest WiFi Is Now Active

Once your OTP configuration is complete and tested, guests will be required to verify their phone number via SMS before accessing your WiFi network. This ensures you collect only valid, verified contact information for your marketing campaigns.

What to do next:

  • Use the DEMO button to test the complete OTP flow before going live

  • Set up SMS marketing campaigns to re-engage guests after their visit

  • Monitor SMS gateway usage and credits to avoid service interruptions

  • Customize the phone field settings (country code, formatting) for your location

Best practices for OTP WiFi login:

  • Set appropriate retry limits: Prevent SMS spam by limiting verification attempts

  • Clear error messaging: Help users troubleshoot if codes don't arrive

  • International guests: Ensure your SMS gateway supports international numbers if needed

  • Backup authentication: Consider offering email login as an alternative for guests without mobile service

Common OTP setup issues:

  • Codes not arriving: Verify your SMS gateway is properly configured with valid credentials and sufficient credits

  • Wrong country code: Set the default country code in phone field settings to match your location

  • Verification timing out: Check your SMS gateway delivery speed—some gateways are faster than others

  • International numbers failing: Confirm your SMS gateway plan supports international SMS delivery

Choosing the right SMS gateway:

  • Twilio: Most reliable, global coverage, higher cost per SMS

  • Messagebird: Good balance of price and reliability

  • Firetext: UK-focused, competitive pricing

  • ECall: Budget option for specific regions
