Configuring an SMS gateway in Spotipo enables phone number validation and SMS-based communication with your WiFi guests. Whether you're using SMS for one-time password authentication, sending payment account details, or verifying phone numbers, an SMS gateway integration is essential for these features to function.

This guide walks you through selecting and configuring an SMS gateway provider in Spotipo. The setup takes approximately 5 minutes and includes a test function to verify SMS delivery before going live.

What you'll accomplish:

  • Select an SMS gateway provider from Spotipo's supported options

  • Configure gateway credentials (API keys, authentication tokens)

  • Test SMS functionality with a test message

  • Enable phone number validation and SMS-based features

What you'll need:

  • Active Spotipo account with admin access

  • SMS gateway account (Twilio, Messagebird, Firetext, ECall, or other supported provider)

  • Gateway API credentials or authentication details

  • Phone number for testing SMS delivery

When SMS gateway is required: Phone number OTP authentication, SMS-based payment confirmations, account credential delivery via text message, or any feature involving automated SMS sending.

Adding an SMS gateway to Spotipo is needed if you intend to use Phone number validation or sending payment account details via SMS.

Login to the Spotipo dashboard and go to Settings -> SMS Settings.

Select the SMS gateway you like to use and configure the credentials.

Remember to save the settings by pressing Save Settings.

Optionally test the SMS functionality by sending a Test SMS (enter a telephone number in the field shown) and click Test SMS button.

Your SMS Gateway Is Now Configured

Once you've selected your SMS provider, entered credentials, and successfully sent a test SMS, your Spotipo site can send text messages to guests. This enables phone number validation, OTP authentication, and SMS-based communication features.

What to do next:

  • Enable Phone Number Login or OTP verification on your splash page

  • Monitor SMS usage and credits in your gateway provider's dashboard

  • Set up alerts for low SMS credit balances to avoid service interruptions

Choosing an SMS gateway provider:

  • Twilio: Most reliable, global coverage, higher cost per message

  • Messagebird: Good balance of reliability and pricing, strong international support

  • Firetext: UK-focused provider with competitive pricing

  • ECall: Budget option for specific regions

SMS gateway best practices:

  • Monitor credit balances to prevent service interruptions during peak times

  • Test SMS delivery in your region before going live with guests

  • Keep gateway credentials secure and don't share API keys

  • Review pricing for international SMS if serving global guests

Common SMS gateway issues:

  • Test SMS doesn't arrive: Verify credentials are correct and gateway account has sufficient credits

  • International numbers failing: Confirm your gateway plan supports international SMS

  • Messages delayed: Check gateway service status and delivery reports
