How to Set Up Free WiFi Upsell

This guide shows you how to configure free trial packages with upsell emails that automatically prompt guests to upgrade before their free time expires.

What you'll accomplish:

  • Create free trial WiFi package with time limits

  • Enable automated upsell emails before trial expiration

  • Configure timing for upgrade reminder emails

  • Convert free users to paid packages seamlessly

What you'll need:

  • Spotipo account with Payment login enabled

  • Paid WiFi packages configured for upsell targets

  • Free trial package created (or ability to create one)

What is it?

Wi-Fi up sell option offers customers to use free Wi-Fi for set amount of time. During that time, they receive an email reminding them that their free Wi-Fi is about to expire and offering them a chance to upgrade to a paid package.

How to set up Wi-Fi Up sell?

To set this option up, you need to have payment option turned on in your splash page. There also need to be a Free Wi-Fi package available under packages. Simplest way to check if that package is available is to check what options appear when you look into your splash page.

After you make sure that payment is set in the splash page, head over to Packages and edit the free package.

If you don't have a free package set up yet, create one by selecting the + Add Trail Package option (Located on the opposite side of + Add Package option if there already isn't a free package available)

From there, turn on the Send up sell email, and set the amount of minutes, to whatever feels suitable to you.

Testing the Up sell option

Once you've set up everything correctly, you can test out this method.

Simply go back to Splash page and select the Demo option.

Select the Free Wi-Fi option and enter your email address.

Since this option is creating a free account for the user, a password will also be needed. So enter that as well.

You should be redirected to whatever website is set in your setting of your site (default is google.com).

After a few minutes, an email like this should appear in your inbox.

If the user selects the Extend My Package option, he is then redirected to a new splash page, which requires him to select one of the available paid packages.

From there, payments are done like with any other paid Wi-Fi option. And the selected package is added to the account that was used to log in to free Wi-Fi earlier.

WiFi Upsell Now Active

Once configured, guests selecting free WiFi receive automated emails prompting them to upgrade before their trial expires. This creates natural conversion opportunities without aggressive sales tactics.

What to do next:

  • Test the complete flow using demo mode and your email

  • Monitor conversion rates from free to paid packages

  • Adjust trial duration and email timing based on performance

Upsell timing strategy: Send reminder emails with enough time remaining for guests to decide (recommend 5-15 minutes before expiration). Too early reduces urgency; too late causes frustration.

Optimization tips:

  • Price paid packages to make upgrade feel worthwhile

  • Highlight benefits in upsell email (faster speeds, more data, longer duration)

  • Test different trial durations to find optimal conversion point
